Toolbox: Assignment 5 with Wood
|
A Tool is a Toolbox is a Tool
Seeing that the object of this assignment was to create a greater-than normal, potentially abstracted toolbox, I decided to make something that held conceptual value. When reflecting on the tools that I use in my day to day life, I chose makeup, as it is a tool I use (almost) every day. Makeup is a tool used to beautify and change appearance, which in effect makes the wearer a tool in some cases, as for a social role. Make up facilitates the facilitator to allow them to play a part that they could not play without the assistance of an enhanced appearance. One is expected to wear makeup and look “their best” when attending prom or any elegant, fancy event. Prostitutes and entertainers of all sorts utilize makeup to become something a little less than human, and very much so a tool used by others. In addition to the makeup and the user being tools, I wanted to make the box itself a more apparent tool. While a tool box is usually sedentary, it serves a role by holding other tools and objects. My toolbox creates a more active role as a tool itself in that it opens up to reveal a palette that not only holds eye shadow compacts but also displays them and arranges them conveniently, holding them steady while you use them. The movement of the panel that this palette is on highlights the active tool that this box is. I had a lot of fun creating this project, and though using the wood shop and machines was intimidating, it was a learning experience for certain and I would be interested in working with wood again. |
