Package Design
The final assignment of ART 102 was to create a box using the design elements of an existing package. Photoshop was used to manipulate the different features of the original packaging to create something new and visually stimulating, lacking a focal point.
For my piece, I chose a small box that held a light up ceramic squirrel figurine. Where the old box design had each individual side in a scallop-edged frame, with several different background colors used in total and lots of small floral and dot details, my piece went for a simpler, larger scale approach to contrast from the original delicate appearance. I enlarged several of the shapes that appeared on the original box, and used the blue color featured on some parts of the original to color the entire background of the new box. I also used repetitious corner decorations in an overlapping pattern to wrap around multiple sides, as I also did with enlarged, linked leaves to keep the viewer turning the box. As part of the assignment, there is no focal point, so the eye never settles. I heavily utilized the technique of wrapping shapes around edges to entice the viewer to turn the box. While my Photoshop skills could definitely be improved upon, this was a good intro to the program and I now feel more confident in my abilities. |
