Lady of Fine Arts House: Assignment 3 on Maquette Development
An Identifier for Fine Arts House
While Neptune North is home to a diverse group of very talented student artists of many disciplines, nobody outside of Fine Arts House seems to know about their existence. Even residents in the 2nd and 3rd floors of Neptune North do not all realize that the first floor is home to this Living Learning Community. What Neptune North needs is an identifier, a sculptural piece outside that illustrates the artistic community inside. The proposed location for this piece would be against the brick wall at the bottom center of the double staircase on the south entrance to Neptune North. This location would allow the piece to be seen as students from all three Neptune complexes, as well as guests and those who take a shortcut through North pass by. This piece contains a female figure which alludes loosely to Classical Greek sculpture, with strong and slightly fuller features than those often depicted by today’s thin-centric beauty standards. The piece puts a modern twist to the depiction of the female however with her hair being cropped short and giving a sense of androgyny. The figure is modern in design and strays further from Classical Greek sculpture as it is comprised of lines that connect to give an appearance of shape and form, rather than being a solid figure. The pencil and canvas clearly signify that the figure is an artist and this serves as a symbol for Fine Arts House, to solve the issue of the community’s lack of identity. The bench she sits on stabilizes the form and serves to take up some space in the annual flower bed that it would sit upon, so that the area does not appear so bare in the winter when all the flowers are removed. I would also propose to plant evergreens and perennials in this area instead, for year-round aesthetic appeal and economical value. The entire piece would be made of a dark material such as cast iron or bronze. |
